Open carries a name so ordinary it disappears into everything else, which is a shame, because this is one of the sturdier French masculines of 1985. It first needs separating from its own flankers: Open Black, Open White and Open Gold arrived much later, in the 2010s, and share neither the structure nor the period of the original. This one no longer appears in the current Roger & Gallet range, now refocused on fresh waters and scented body care, and specialist sellers describe it as out of production.
The opening is crisp and hesperidic, Amalfi lemon and bergamot lifted by lavender, instantly recognisable as of its time. The heart tightens into the herbal, thyme and sage cutting through the citrus without softening it. Then the fragrance descends to where it gets interesting: a base of tobacco, vetiver and patchouli, dry, earthy and warm, which holds for a long time and without detour. This is a woody aromatic of the old school, belonging with classical aromatic fragrances rather than modern fresh ones.
